To say Gentry Stein has worked hard for this National title is an understatement. He has risen through the ranks of competitive yo-yoing in short order. He’s had his share of successes and failures. He’s dismissed the haters and showed what determination really means. As a local from Chico, this win makes it all the sweeter. In front of friends, family, Factory and fans he took home top honors and after years of being so close, finally captured the US National Champion title. Congratulations Gentry, from all of us at YoYoFactory.
Harold Owens III took to the stage with confidence this year. Coming in at his traditional 2nd highest score of prelims, he was ready to show a whole new level of accuracy to the stage. When the dust settled on the stage Harold was standing proud with a 4th place finish. When asked as a former National Champion if he was disappointed with 4th he replied, “I couldn’t have asked for a better freestyle. I went as hard as I could and hit everything. No shame in that.” Spoken like a true Champion.

If you follow our Facebook Page you probably saw our Pre-Worlds prep for the team. Part of what we do here at YoYoFactory is provide the best possible equipment to our team. When Luis came to us and asked that we make special version of the popular Genesis, we couldn’t say no! The first, and most noticeable change was we added a small step in the inner wall to cut down even more friction when in horizontal tricks. The next part was where it got tricky, the weight. Luis had some ideas, but he really needed to feel the weights to decide. So we ended up with 3 different weights, each denoted by color. Luis actually ended up using a 2 different weighted versions at Worlds to capture 3rd place! He used orange at prelims because it was the heaviest and let him power through his tricks and rack up the points. Then he moved on to the Pink for Semis and Finals.
We have a great team from around the world that supports and awesome community. In Mexico we are proud to support the best players around. This video catches up with National Champion Paul Kerbel and up-and-comer Betty Gallegos.
