Harold Owens III took to the stage with confidence this year. Coming in at his traditional 2nd highest score of prelims, he was ready to show a whole new level of accuracy to the stage. When the dust settled on the stage Harold was standing proud with a 4th place finish. When asked as a former National Champion if he was disappointed with 4th he replied, “I couldn’t have asked for a better freestyle. I went as hard as I could and hit everything. No shame in that.” Spoken like a true Champion.

It should come to no surprise that the YoYoFactory Team does a lot of traveling. On any given weekend we have members attending contests, doing trade shows, touring, teaching and promoting Yo-Yo literally around the world. To give you a little glimpse into where we’re at this weekend, we put together a little report:

Ann is no stranger to travel. Over the last few years she’s become quite a jetsetter, hitting Japan, China, Russia, Australia and all over the USA on tour. Her current trip takes her to the London for a few days, then this weekend Ann makes an appearance at a Toy show in Japan as the special guest. From Japan she’ll be heading to Prague. Then onto a whirlwind European tour. Poland and France among others.

Jason Lee is in transit between the Middle East (Iran was the last place he touched down) and Europe. Pictured below, Jason is standing at the edge of a perpetually burning gas crater. Berlin for a bit, then to Prague to meet up with Ann and the SLUSNY crew. Where to after that? Only Jason knows.

State-side US National Champ Patrick Borgerding took 1st at Midwest Regionals, then headed to Chicago for some sight seeing and inspiration.

Here at the YoYoFactory Office in Arizona, Tyler Severance just booked his tickets South Central Reagionals in Denver, CO. And everyone is finalizing travel plans to Worlds.

We also have some special guests in the office. Former US National Champ Harold Owens III is in town for an extended stay. Sharpening his demonstrating skills with the awesome summer programs Tyler is running here, and fine tuning his Worlds freestyle. He’s got to make it through all the prelims AND get a final routine down. The peace and quite of the desert is helping him focus.

Along with Harold, we also had a surprise visit from 2x time World Champion Eiji Okuyama all the way from Japan. He and Harold made the trek up to the Grand Canyon to see the sights and get some cool photos.

And finally, Brazil is getting ready for it’s National Yo-Yo Contest and YoYoFactory will be represented by Paolo Bueno! He and his family are down visiting family and fortunately it coincides with Brazil Nationals.

Just wanted to share one of the new H.O.T. colorways. We’re fortunate enough to have it’s namesake, former US National Champ Harold Owens III in the offices overseeing production, with plans to make these releases very special.

The 2013 Contest Season is really heating up in the US. One of the biggest State level contests, Minnesota States, drew many top players from the country, and even Canada. Coming out at the top spot, Harold Owens III is really showing a strong start to the season. With his eye on BAC, and ultimately Worlds in August, Harold has the determination and is putting in the hours.

To show the long, stable spinning of the Ricochet we gathered some of the best in the world to test how long they could make a trick on the Ricochet. In the next few days we’ll be releasing single trick videos from Harold, Paul, Clint and Vashek to show you the Ricochet going through some serious testing. Who will have the longest trick? Moreover, how long can YOU throw for?

Paul Han rips through his long trick with the Ricochet! He’s not one to waste time or speed in a freestyle. Clocking in at 30.7 seconds, it’s clear he could have hit a longer trick. Just watch how much spin is left when it returns to the hand. That’s the power of Titanium! Think you can beat him? March 17th the Ricochet releases and you’ll have a chance to shine, or spark!

Next, we have Harold Owens III throwing down his long Ricochet trick. Clocking in at a strong 48 seconds, that’s almost 1 throw for a qualifying round! When every second of a prelim counts, don’t you want to maximize your time by not having to return and throw your yo-yo more then you need to? On March 17th you can!

Coming in at 55.5 seconds on the Ricochet… multi-time Czech National Champion, and European Champion, Vashek! That’s pretty close to a 1 minute freestyle, in 1 throw. And with the tricks he’s doing, he would be one of the top qualifiers.

Clint Armstrong, as his last name would suggest, hit it with a huge 1:18.3 second on the Ricochet!

Now, it’s your turn! Ricochet hits stores this weekend, March 17th. For those lucky enough to score one, we want to see how long you can go with 1 throw! Who’s in?

Harold Owens is a scientist. Seriously, he’s going to school for Chemistry. But he’s been experimenting with yo-yo tricks as well. Testing, re-testing. Trying to get that perfect blend of smooth, stylish yo-yo tricks. And he’s honing in. With his eye on the the top spot in the world, Harold plans to go hard in 2013.

It is always amazing to see a yo-yo player come out of nowhere to make a name for themselves. Harold Owens III went from winning a couple of small local contests one year to taking the top spot at the USA National Yo-Yo Contest the next year. His smooth and fluid on stage presence have made him one of the “must-see” performances at every contest that he attends. When we started working together with Harold on an idea for a signature yo-yo, the designs looked different than anything that we had ever made before. The H.O.T. is one of the biggest and boldest YoYoFactory yo-yos ever released!

Specs:
67.9 Grams
56.4 mm Diameter
45.7 mm Wide

Harold Owens III isn’t one to be complacent. After an amazing win at 2011 at US Nationals he was the player to watch in 2012. But instead of getting by with his winning style of 2011 he started over. He completely rethought his approach and fine tuned what he wanted to do.

With a seed from US Nationals, Harold Owens III got to sit back and watch the others battle through prelims and semi-finals. Harold had his freestyle on lock and his confidence showed on stage. Coming in at 4th, Harold was the top placing US competitor. And that’s a good spot to be in for Nationals in October.

One of the cornerstones of YoYoFactory is our team. You’d be hard pressed to find a more eclectic group of up-and-comers, veterans, future, and current champions. Their skill is undeniable.

Future Champions, Paul and Luis are focused and hungry any title they go for. With a 1-2 finish, their biggest competitor? Each other. You’d be hard pressed to find a more dynamic duo that push each other to succeed on and off the stage. Last year at the World Championships they showed what they were capable of. And this year they are on the top of the list for the top spot in the world.

The Veteran, Paul Han has accomplished the most winning BAC career in history. 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2006 were champion years at BAC for him. And when he wasn’t the top spot, he was still on the podium. 2012 brought yet another top 3 placing. 15 years of undeniable skills.

Current Champion, for Harold Owens III, 2011 was a stellar year. And he’s not planning on making 2012 any different. With a US National Title under his belt, he hit 2012 running with a very experimental California States freestyle. For BAC Harold took a new approach to trick development. Trying to strip down all the filler and concentrate on amazing trick composition. And it definitely showed. Next stop, the Worlds stage.

The Up-and-Comer, Kevin Nicholas is fast becoming the underdog of 2012. Breaking onto the US contest scene at PNWR earlier in the year, at Cal States we knew we wanted him on the team. And after his back breaking performance at BAC, we knew it was Contest Team material. His precision and unique approach has gained accolades from his peers, and a firm hold on earning a finals spot at Worlds this year.
